How do you interpret this photograph of an abandoned home in Detroit?
Does the photograph reinforce your tendency to seek evidence of the degradation of suburban
neighborhoods, economic collapse, and human displacement, neglect, and
despair?
Could it reinforce a positive set of
values and provide reassurance and security?
In the midst of daily reports of alarming species depletions and
extinctions, this photograph might be viewed as a welcome reminder that an invisible storehouse
of life forms circulates in our midst. Seeds and spores are abundant, pervasive,
and diverse. With amazing rapidity, these nuggets of life colonize neglected crevices in the paved and weeded and polluted expanses
of human development.
This botanical
take-over does not only provide uplifting evidence of an inherent determination
to grow and reproduce. It also documents that the self-preserving urge can have
startling success.
Eco-systems display a powerful urge to return to an ‘original’ form.
Many life forms are fragile
and threatened. But not all. Some are resilient and thrive despite horrific odds.
Wilderness is right around your corner.
This violation of the designed landscape displays a triumph of nature's resilience.
